- Read
- Read Psalm 75 in three different versions
- Understanding (what does the text say? What does the text mean?)
- Who wrote this psalm?
- What does it mean to “lift up your horn” (vv. 4, 5, 10)?
- NET Note on v. 4: “The horn of an ox underlies the metaphor (see Deut. 33:17; 1 Kgs 22:11; Ps 92:10). The horn of the wild ox is frequently a metaphor for military strength; the idiom ‘exalt/lift up the horn’ signifies military victory (see 1 Sam 2:10; Pss 89:17, 24; 92:10; Lam 2:17). Here the idiom seems to refer to an arrogant attitude that assumes victory has been achieved.”
- What is the principal thing that this psalm says that God will do? (judge)
- What instructions does God give, and to whom? (vv. 4, 5)
- How does Asaph respond to God’s message? (give thanks, recount God’s wondrous deeds, declare it forever, sing praises, cut off the horns of the wicked)
- Application
- What message from this psalm particularly hits home for you?
- What do you think that God wants you to do about this psalm?
- What can you share with someone else this week?
